Week 1 Picks

DenverDenver (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Baltimore

World Picks: 55.1% - Denver
BAL 27 DEN 49 Denver Wins
Your Pick:

I am confident the Denver Broncos will avenge the Divisional Round playoff loss from last year, but am not confident that it will be by more than seven points. Without Elvis Dumerville and Vonn Miller, the Broncos lose a lot in outside in pass rush ability. With Terrell Suggs and now Dumerville, the Ravens have what Denver does not. The Ravens have lost talent, leadership and experience from the Super Bowl team of last year, but GM Ozzie Newsome saw it coming and has replaced talent with talent, leadership with new enthusiasm, and experience with youthful legs. Denver will score points and probably jump out to an early lead, but Baltimore is a tough, well-coached team that will work through any adversity and keep it close.

Schultz Picks: New England

World Picks: 84.9% - New England
NE 23 BUF 21 Buffalo Wins
Your Pick:

For the Bills to win this one C.J. Spiller will need to be a 100-yard back, if not more. New England knows that too and will do anything and everything to make Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel make plays he has never experienced at the pro level. Much of the talk is about the possible regression of the Patriots without three top receivers, but I expect Tom Brady will have his receivers well educated and polished. Sometimes a great quarterback will make everyone around him better. Brady does and will. New England covers.

ChicagoChicago (-3.0)
Schultz Picks: Cincinnati

World Picks: 54.5% - Chicago
CIN 21 CHI 24 Tie
Your Pick:

Marvin Lewis has a good team, Marc Trestman will have a good team. Chicago has the more efficient offence with Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte but the Bengals have a top defensive line which means they don't have to blitz to get to a quarterback. Year three for Andy Dalton, no reason not to continue to progress. Bears are favoured by three but I like the Bengals.

Schultz Picks: Miami

World Picks: 62.1% - Miami
MIA 23 CLE 10 Miami Wins
Your Pick:

This is the time that all the money invested in talent is seen on the field for the Dolphins. If they mesh and they should be good, the only issue is consistency of offensive line play over 16 games. Ryan Tannehill does not receive the publicity of RGIII, Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson, but is similar in ability. For the Browns, it's another transition with another set of coaches for another year. Since 1999, when the Browns re-entered the league, they have gone 1-13 in openers.

New OrleansNew Orleans (-3.0)
Schultz Picks: Atlanta

World Picks: 53.0% - New Orleans
ATL 17 NO 23 New Orleans Wins
Your Pick:

This one could go either way and it is easy to make an argument for both teams. Now the Saints are 10-2 against Atlanta under Sean Payton and 5-1 at the Superdome. But how much has the defence improved from last year's team that allowed an NFL record 7,042 yards. For the Falcons, how will the young cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford react against the talent of the Drew Bress' receivers? The Saints have more unknown responses than Atlanta, so I'm taking the Falcons.

Tampa BayTampa Bay (-3.0)

Schultz Picks: Tampa Bay

World Picks: 89.6% - Tampa Bay
TB 17 NYJ 18 NY Jets Wins
Your Pick:

I like the Bucs. Greg Schaino will have his guys ready to go and playing an inexperienced Geno Smith it may be over soon. Tampa Bay's speed is what Smith will have to adjust to every play; the closing speed of defensive backs and pursuit speed of the defensive line.

PittsburghPittsburgh (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Pittsburgh

World Picks: 72.6% - Pittsburgh
TEN 16 PIT 9 Tennessee Wins
Your Pick:

Both teams have running issues. For Tennessee, they have to try to run the ball against one of the best run defences year in and year out. For the Steelers, the issue is no proven running back. But being early in the season, Troy Polamalu will be at his best. In the battle of unknown running defence and offence, I like the Steelers to cover.

@
DetroitDetroit (-4.5)
Schultz Picks: Minnesota

World Picks: 62.6% - Detroit
MIN 24 DET 34 Detroit Wins
Your Pick:

Minnesota has two good offensive tackles in Phil Loadholt and Matt Kalil. They should be able to control the edges in the pass game and running the football. Calvin Johnson will make his plays, especially with Reggie Bush in the backfield, against a continually rebuilding secondary of Minnesota. But Week 1, a divisional game and a possible time of possession dominance for Minnesota? Minnesota should cover.

IndianapolisIndianapolis (-9.5)
Schultz Picks: Indianapolis

World Picks: 90.7% - Indianapolis
OAK 17 IND 21 Oakland Wins
Your Pick:

Terrelle Pryor will start over Matt Flynn. Andrew Luck will continue to fulfill the expectations of a true No. 1 The Colts were 7-2 last year when committing one turnover or less; most likely that efficiency will continue. Pryor will be playing against a first team defence for a full game on the road. Colts should win big.

SeattleSeattle (-3.0)
@
Schultz Picks: Seattle

World Picks: 78.6% - Seattle
SEA 12 CAR 7 Seattle Wins
Your Pick:

This is a bit of a trap game for Seattle. All the intense hype of Super Bowl talk, on the road and playing an ever-improving Cam Newton. On the opposite side there's Russell Wilson, now in his second year, and supported by the best defence last year. This one will not be easy as both teams have top 10 defences, but I think Seattle covers.

1:00 PM Sunday, September 08, 2013

Kansas CityKansas City (-3.5)
@
Schultz Picks: Kansas City

World Picks: 84.0% - Kansas City
KC 28 JAC 2 Kansas City Wins
Your Pick:

Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel will be the side show as first and second picks playing on opposite teams Week 1. But the substance of this game is Andy Reid as new head coach against another true new head coach Gus Bradley. If KC takes Maurice Jones Drew out of the game it could be a relatively easy win in the second half. Alex Smith should win the turnover battle and KC should start the season right.

St. LouisSt. Louis (-4.5)
Schultz Picks: St. Louis

World Picks: 76.4% - St. Louis
ARI 24 STL 27 Arizona Wins
Your Pick:

Arizona will be an improved team, the Rams already are. The Rams' strength is their pass rush and pass blocking is the Cardinals' weakness. And the Rams went 2-1-1 against the best in the division, San Francisco and Seattle. Speed was so perfectly added to St. Louis with Tavon Austin, all 5'8" and 174 pounds of him. He'll make an impact and the Rams will cover.

4:25 PM Sunday, September 08, 2013

@
San FranciscoSan Francisco (-4.5)
Schultz Picks: Green Bay

World Picks: 60.5% - San Francisco
GB 28 SF 34 San Francisco Wins
Your Pick:

You would have to think that the Packers have reviewed every possible aspect of last years Divisional playoff loss to San Francisco and have a better plan than the one used in the 45-31 loss that included 444 total yards. And that they have a higher understanding of the complexity of the blocking patterns the 49ers employ to confuse a defensive front seven as much as move them off the ball. No doubt the Packers were humbled last January and so was Aaron Rogers. Perfect, just where you want them. 49er win but the Packers cover the spread.

DallasDallas (-3.0)
Schultz Picks: Dallas

World Picks: 56.8% - Dallas
NYG 31 DAL 36 Dallas Wins
Your Pick:

All good things must end at some point and for the Giants their dominate success of four straight wins over Dallas at Cowboys Stadium ends as it is now the newly named AT&T Stadium. More than anything else Dallas has simplified things on defence. Gone is the complexity of Rob Ryan and in is a four-man pass rush, drop seven of Monte Kiffin. And gone is the play calling responsibilities of Jason Garrett, now up to Bill Callahan; both good moves. But why I like Dalls to cover is two inexperienced starters on the offensive line and a physically limited Jason Pierre-Paul. Dallas simplifies and wins.

WashingtonWashington (-3.5)
Schultz Picks: Washington

World Picks: 84.8% - Washington
PHI 33 WSH 27 Philadelphia Wins
Your Pick:

Home field advantage is a real advantage for Washinton Monday night. A lot is made of RGIII and the absence of playing time going into this game. I don't think it will be a problem at all. Turn around and give the ball to Alfred Morris, he's very dependable to perform. With Philadelphia, there's a new system, a new coach, new everything. Too much new to start a season. The Redskins return 21 starters and have not lost a regular season game in 10 months. Redskins cover.

HoustonHouston (-3.5)

Schultz Picks: Houston

World Picks: 91.2% - Houston
HOU 31 SD 28 San Diego Wins
Your Pick:

One is a playoff team, Houston, and one is a re-building team, San Diego. The only way I can see the Chargers winning big is if Philip Rivers has one of his best games as a quarterback he has had in the last five years. New coach Mike McCoy will have that in mind but so will Wade Philips, Houston's defensive coordinator. Houston will pound Arian Foster, who is healthy and has that running back burst, and from there everything else fall into place. Houston covers.
