Week 17 Picks

CarolinaCarolina (-7.0)

Schultz Picks: Atlanta

World Picks: 70.2% - Carolina
CAR 21 ATL 20 Atlanta Wins
Your Pick:

For Carolina, if they win and both Seattle and San Francisco lose, the NFC South is theirs and they get home field throughout the playoffs. So the Panthers still have a lot to play for here in Week 17. With Atlanta, you have to give them credit for competing well on Monday night in San Francisco and were an interception away from at least putting the game into overtime. The unknown is the attitude of players who are playing on a team with nothing to play for. Is there a self-preservation mentality in an effort to avoid injuries or a warrior mentality of playing each moment? Atlanta is full of young players trying to improve and this game is an excellent opportunity to display ability. I am sure Tony Gonzalez would love to end his career with a touchdown or two - and a win. Atlanta keeps it close - Falcons.

CincinnatiCincinnati (-6.0)
Schultz Picks: Cincinnati

World Picks: 56.9% - Cincinnati
BAL 17 CIN 34 Cincinnati Wins
Your Pick:

The Bengals did what good teams with good players are supposed to do - respond. After a 30-20 loss at Pittsburgh, the Cincinnati Bengals beat Minnesota 42-14. The most impressive aspect of the game was that the Bengals held Minnesota to 10 total first downs and were 0-for-9 on third down. With a win at home (7-0) and a Patriot loss it is Cincinnati that would have a first round bye over New England. Still, the game has meaning for the Ravens, too. They must win, or San Diego or Miami gets the last Wild Card spot. If they lose, then Miami, San Diego and Pittsburgh have to lose. This is a classic problem for Marvin Lewis. If he hears that New England is going to beat Buffalo, do you consider taking out players for injury/safety concerns? This is a tough one, but I think the Bengals at home take care of the Ravens and cover - Bengals.

MiamiMiami (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Miami

World Picks: 68.8% - Miami
NYJ 20 MIA 7 NY Jets Wins
Your Pick:

Miami needs to win and Baltimore has to lose or tie to make the playoffs - it's very possible. The Dolphins had major pass protection problems last week in Buffalo that will be corrected - especially if they were assignment errors as opposed to physical ones. If the Dolphins get in, they need to earn it because the San Diego Chargers can win the sixth spot with both Baltimore losing or tie and a Miami loss or tie. The Dolphin defence should be able to shut down Geno Smith and if they don't beat the Jets, the Dolphins don't deserve the sixth spot in the playoffs. But I think they respond and get it. Miami covers the seven and moves into the spot.

MinnesotaMinnesota (-3.0)
Schultz Picks: Minnesota

World Picks: 53.2% - Detroit
DET 13 MIN 14 Detroit Wins
Your Pick:

Both coaches may not be back next year. For Detroit, losing five of six destroyed their playoff chances. For Minnesota, they made a playoff appearance last year and now you get the impression they are in a rebuilding mentality. It was a long week for both organizations but probably longer in Detroit as expectations were so high. Vikings cover the 3 1/2.

TennesseeTennessee (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Tennessee

World Picks: 71.4% - Tennessee
HOU 10 TEN 16 Houston Wins
Your Pick:

If the Texans lose, they are guaranteed the No. 1 draft pick in all of NFL football and will probably take what they evaluate as the best quarterback available. Some say that the Texans are a quarterback away from respectability, but they have allowed 412 points over 15 games - so it may be more than just a quarterback away. For Tennessee, do you keep Mike Munchuck and the staff? Do you keep Chris Johnson as your primary ball carrier? You would have to think Jake Locker is secure at quarterback and Ryan Fitzpatrick as well. Last game of the season for both - take Titans at home to cover the seven.

IndianapolisIndianapolis (-11.5)
Schultz Picks: Jacksonville

World Picks: 68.8% - Jacksonville
JAC 10 IND 30 Indianapolis Wins
Your Pick:

The Colts are pretty well set. They will represent the AFC south and in all likelihood will play the Chiefs. Now to obtain a first round bye the Patriots would have to lose and the Bengals would have to lose or tie against Baltimore. I can see Chuck Pagano playing to survive this game, not only to avoid injury but also avoid any more video for the Chiefs to study. The Jaguars, like the Falcons, have young players who want to have NFL careers - not just NFL experiences. Gus Bradley will play to win as he wants as much positive momentum he can generate moving into 2014. Could you imagine if Andrew Luck was injured in this one ? Jaguars on points.

NY GiantsNY Giants (-3.5)
Schultz Picks: NY Giants

World Picks: 73.9% - NY Giants
WSH 6 NYG 20 NY Giants Wins
Your Pick:

Game No. 3 for Kirk Cousins to improve his value as an NFL quarterback. And for him it it's important because no matter the coaching situation in Washington, the value of Kirk Cousins is still up for argument. For the Giants, the best they can finish is third in the NFC East but they know there is a better chance Tom Coughlin is back in New York than Mike Shanahan is in Washington . The Redskins' mini-Super Bowl was last week at home against Dallas. This week is completely different. Giants at home cover the 3 1/2.

PittsburghPittsburgh (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Pittsburgh

World Picks: 79.9% - Pittsburgh
CLE 7 PIT 20 Pittsburgh Wins
Your Pick:

So you're saying there's a chance! The answer is yes if you play for the Steelers. Now a lot has to go right - The Dolphins would have to lose to the Jets, the Ravens would have to lose to the Bengals and the Chargers would have to lose to the Chiefs. All possible, but I think only one - Bengals over Ravens - is likely. The Browns' very unpredictable season is about to conclude. There are five other teams with only four wins so if the Browns lose it enhances their draft position. That is the only realistic and optimistic point for Browns football as the season closes. Steelers by 10, covering the seven.

San DiegoSan Diego (-9.5)
Schultz Picks: San Diego

World Picks: 52.6% - Kansas City
KC 24 SD 27 Kansas City Wins
Your Pick:

The major issue here is not so much what the Chargers will do as much as what Andy Reid has said he will do - mix and match his personnel. And by doing so, he'll look at this game with less urgency – it's the smart thing to do. Just like the Colts, the risk is not worth the reward. The Chiefs know where they will be in the playoffs, so staying healthy and showing your opponent nothing to work with the next week. The Chargers are a pretty good team and have beaten some good teams. They have a chance if Miami and Baltimore lose, though the first is unlikely and the second is, well, possible. But even if the Chargers end the season at 9-7, Mike McCoy will have to look at 2013 as the beginning of something good. Chargers cover and get the ninth.

SeattleSeattle (-11.0)
Schultz Picks: Seattle

World Picks: 60.9% - Seattle
STL 9 SEA 27 Seattle Wins
Your Pick:

Seattle does not have home field through the NFC playoffs yet. They need to win to feel secure. And they do play a St. Louis team that reminds me of the Chargers. If St. Louis wins, they would be 8-8 with a lot to look forward to in 2014. The tough thing about Rams football is that what used to be the most uncompetitive division in football two years ago may be the best now. The Seahawks do not want to lose two in a row at home and then slide into the playoffs. They need this one to re-establish home field dominance . I think they'll get it. Seattle big over St. Louis and earns home field throughout.

4:25 PM Sunday, December 29, 2013

@
Schultz Picks: San Francisco

World Picks: 56.1% - San Francisco
SF 23 ARI 20 San Francisco Wins
Your Pick:

Arizona can win and get in. San Francisco can win and get in. So the bottom line is to win. Both teams are playing their best football right now. For the 49ers, they came through in their last game with a 10 point win. For Arizona, you can underestimate the confidence of beating a Seattle team that shares the best win-loss record and has the second-fewest points allowed. Carson Palmer is playing his best and Bruce Arians may be NFL coach of the year. All that said, I still like the 49ers to rise to the challenge on the road - take San Francisco.

DenverDenver (-12.5)
@
Schultz Picks: Denver

World Picks: 74.2% - Denver
DEN 34 OAK 14 Denver Wins
Your Pick:

How much will Payton Manning play? New England is 11- 4 and Denver is 12-3. If Denver were to lose to Oakland, then the AFC Championship will go through New England and not Denver. I think Manning plays until the Broncos achieve a comfortable lead. Also, without Von Miller, this is an excellent opportunity for Jack Del Rio to experiment a little on defence and see if he can find an individual replacement to adjust fronts, stunts and blitzes. A lot of records on the line for Manning and that may be an abstract goal slightly below the AFC championship being played in Denver as a primary. Denver rolls and covers.

New EnglandNew England (-9.5)
Schultz Picks: New England

World Picks: 73.5% - New England
BUF 20 NE 34 New England Wins
Your Pick:

Lots to play for if you're a New England Patriot. Bottom line is if they win, they gain at the very least a No. 2 position and a week of recovery before a divisional final game at home. They will need an excellent game from Brady's blockers because the Bills' defensive line is playing well and Kiko Alonso is one of the best young linebackers in all of football. Two questions going into this game - will EJ Manuel play quarterback and will Nate Solder be back at left tackle? We may not know until late in the preparation week, but with there's so much on the line for the Patriots I think you see their best come 1pm et at Gillette Stadium. Patriots cover at home.

New OrleansNew Orleans (-13.0)
Schultz Picks: Tampa Bay

World Picks: 51.3% - New Orleans
TB 17 NO 42 New Orleans Wins
Your Pick:

Too many points for me in a divisional game, but the Saints do have hope as with a win and a Carolina loss, the Saints could still win the NFC South and get a first round bye. The key will be opening two possessions on defence for the Bucs. The Saints are fast starters and if the Bucs can limit success early this will be within the 13 given. I think Greg Schiano will be back as head coach for the Bucs and his players know that, as difficult as the season has been. Saints win, but Bucs keep it close...take the Bucs.

ChicagoChicago (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Chicago

World Picks: 71.8% - Green Bay
GB 33 CHI 28 Green Bay Wins
Your Pick:

Everything depends on the health of Aaron Rodgers. If healthy and ready to go, the only question is timing between himself and his receivers. You can lose that timing pretty fast but can also recreate it pretty fast once your in-game intensity is been repeated in body and mind so many times . Personally, I would not play Rodgers as he is the future. Chicago is going to have to dismiss the past and concentrate on the present. They had no chance after being down 21-0 to an Eagle team that could surprise everyone if they win their division. The Packers need Eddie Lacy to have a great game and he too is battling an ankle problem. Then add the absence of Clay Matthews and the Packers have many unknown health issues. Bears win but Packers keep it close.

PhiladelphiaPhiladelphia (-6.5)
@
Schultz Picks: Philadelphia

World Picks: 82.3% - Philadelphia
PHI 24 DAL 22 Dallas Wins
Your Pick:

Even if Tony Romo was 100 per cent healthy, I still would like the Eagles. If the Eagles start fast and do what they did to the Bears defence, then the running game will be absent for Dallas. Without a dominant time of possession advantage, I just can't see Dallas keeping pace touchdown for touchdown. Kyle Orton is a good quarterback with over 80 starts, but can't do what Tony Romo does - make nothing plays into dramatically positive ones. And even if Romo plays, how effective will he be? A herniated disc put people in a hospital bed - can't see a good result from this. For the 10th time in 11 games, the Philadelphia Eagles have held an opponent to 21 or less. Could you see a Bengals/Eagles Super Bowl? Eagles cover.
