The American Hockey League suspended Calgary Flames minor leaguer Trevor Gillies 12 games on Monday for an incident that occurred Friday night against the Rochester Americans.

Gillies, who plays for the Adirondack Flames, slammed Buffalo Sabres' prospect William Carrier's head into the ice during a fight in the game.

He will be able to return to action on Nov. 15 against the Lake Erie Monsters.

The 35-year-old Gillies last played in the NHL in 2011-12 with the New York Islanders.

His NHL career was also marked by heavy suspensions, particularly a pair he received during the 2010-11 season.

In a Feb. 11, 2011 game against the Pittsburgh, Gillies elbowed then-Penguins' forward Eric Tangradi in the head and proceeded to punch him repeatedly while he was on the ice. That incident earned him a nine-game suspension.

Gillies earned another lengthy suspension in his first game back from that suspension after a high hit on then-Minnesota Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck. He received 10 games for the hit after an in-person hearing with the League.
