PORTLAND, Maine -- Edward Pasquale made 22 saves as the St. John's IceCaps blanked the Portland Pirates 3-0 on Saturday in American Hockey League action.
Spencer Machacek was in on all of St. John's (27-11-6) goals, scoring and adding two assists. Zach Redmond added a goal, while Kenndal McArdle put the puck into an empty net.
Justin Pogge stopped 16 of 18 shots for Portland (21-18-5).
Machacek and Redmond both scored on the power play as the IceCaps went 2-for-3 with the man advantage. The Pirates couldn't capitalize on their three power plays.
Machacek opened the scoring for the IceCaps late in the first period with his 11th goal of the year. St. John's leading scorer beat Pogge with just six seconds remaining in the opening period.
Machacek was also instrumental on the IceCaps' second goal. Machacek had the puck deep in the Portland zone on a power play. He fired a cross-ice pass to all-star defenceman Redmond on the left point, who fired a slapshot past Pogge to put St. John's up 2-0.
Machacek recorded his third point of the night -- and team-leading 34th of the season -- on McArdle's empty-net goal.
The win sends the IceCaps to the AHL all-star break with a 5-1 record in their recent six-game road trip.
Three members of the IceCaps leave Portland and travel to Philadelphia for the 2012 AHL all-star classic.
Keith McCambridge will be the head coach behind the Eastern Conference bench on Monday. Rookie Redmond will play in his first all-star game, while Paul Postma will be playing in his second.
