Curtis McElhinney replaced Frederik Andersen in goal for the Maple Leafs to start the second period against the Buffalo Sabres.

Andersen left the game with an upper-body injury and will not return to action.

Early in the opening frame, Sabres forward William Carrier appeared to collide with Andersen's head. The goaltender finished the frame, but looked shaken up by the hit in the immediate aftermath.

Carrier was the same player who sent Morgan Rielly into the boards on Jan. 17 and caused the high-ankle sprain that kept Rielly out for six games.

The 27-year-old goalie has posted a 30-15-14 record with the Maple Leafs this season with a 2.64 goals against average and .919 save percentage.

Andersen has already started a career high 60 games this season. His previous high was 54 games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2014-15.
