Colorado Avalanche defenceman Erik Johnson will miss three to eight weeks after undergoing a knee scope during the All-Star break.

Patrick Roy announced the injury as the Avalanche returned to practice on Monday.

"He is, first of all, very disappointed about the situation" Roy said of Johnson. "It's out of our control."

Johnson pulled out of the All-Star game due to the injury and would have been forced to miss the Avalanche's Tuesday game against the Nashville Predators.

The 26-year-old has 12 goals and 11 assists in 47 games with Colorado this season. His 12 goals are already a career high in seven NHL seasons.

The St. Louis Blues selected Johnson with the first overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft.
