June 23rd ... Day of the Flyers

Monday's trade between the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets resulting in Scott Hartnell heading west for R.J. Umberger and a fourth round pick caught many people by surprise. Perhaps it shouldn't have, as it seems the Flyers have made a pattern out of executing big trades on this day.

In 2012, James Van Riemsdyk was sent to Toronto for Luke Schenn.

In 2011, there were two massive trades -- Mike Richards to the L.A. Kings for Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn and a 2nd round pick, as well as Jeff Carter to Columbus for Jakub Voracek, a 1st round pick (Sean Couturier) and a 3rd rounder (Nick Cousins).

So what's special about this day?

Well, U.S. President Richard M. Nixon and White House Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman were taped today figuring out how the C.I.A. would mess with the F.B.I.'s investigation in to the Watergate Scandal in 1972.

In 1973, George Harrison began a five-week run at #1 on the Billboard chart with this diddy:

No, that can't be it. The only possible reasoning is that 23 was the number worn by Ilkka Sinisalo, Philidelphia's best-ever Finnish player. Sinisalo is one of five players in history to score his first NHL goal on a penalty shot. He's also a member of the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Plus, check out that game face! Terrifying:
