SEATTLE - The Seattle Mariners have released recently acquired pitcher Anthony Bass so he can pursue an opportunity to pitch in Japan.

Seattle announced the roster decision Thursday, which leaves the Mariners' 40-man roster at 39.

Bass was acquired from Texas along with outfielder Leonys Martin in a five-player trade in November as part of Seattle's busy off-season makeover. Bass appeared in 33 games last season for Texas and had a 4.50 ERA in 64 relief appearances. He was expected to compete for a spot in Seattle's bullpen and was arbitration eligible.
