NEW YORK, N.Y. - Infielder Wilson Betemit has been suspended for 50 games following a positive test for a banned amphetamine under baseball's minor league drug program.

Betemit is a free agent after playing for Tampa Bay's Triple-A team at Durham last year. The commissioner's office said Monday his suspension will start when he signs with another major league organization.

The 33-year-old has a .267 batting average with 75 homers and 283 RBIs in 11 major league seasons with Atlanta (2001, 2004-06), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2006-07), the New York Yankees (2007-08), the Chicago White Sox (2009), Kansas City (2010-11), Detroit (2011) and Baltimore (2012-13).

He batted .217 in 396 at-bats over 111 games in the International League last year.
