After Peyton Manning's seven-touchdown extravaganza against the defending-champion Baltimore Ravens on opening night, the Denver Broncos have claimed top spot in the TSN.ca NFL Power Rankings, ahead of the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots.
Fluctuations will be much larger in the first few weeks as it takes time for the statistics to settle down, but the rankings will react to what happens on the field, even if the first moves are more dramatic.
Among the big movers after the first week's games, the Chicago Bears climbed from 11 to seven on the strength of their win and a few teams above them stumbling.
Detroit, with their Reggie Bush-infused offence, climbed from 16 to nine, and the speed kills offence of the Philadelphia Eagles jumped from 21 to 10. The Kansas City Chiefs may have benefitted from weak opposition, but their domination of Jacksonville resulted in a move from 26 to 18.
Heading south, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a disastrous opening week and fell from nine to 17. The Minnesota Vikings, with problems on defence and at quarterback, moved from 19 to 25 and the turnover-happy (and injury-plagued) New York Giants dipped from 18 to 26.
