Tigers, Red Sox, Pirates battle at top of MLB Power Rankings

The Detroit Tigers continue to hold down top spot in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Boston Red Sox and -- going to the playoffs! -- Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Red Sox have gone 20-7 in their last 27 games to pull away from the rest of the American League East, and part of the reason for their strong finish has been the work of lefthanded starter Jon Lester, who has a 2.29 ERA in a dozen starts since the All-Star break.

Among other teams moving up, the Washington Nationals jumped into the Top 10, from 13, on the strength of a 16-6 record in their last 22 games. Too little, too late, but a strong finish nonetheless.

The Los Angeles Angels still have a shot at a .500 record, after going 21-9 in their last 30 games; a deceptive end to an otherwise terrible season.

Falling, at the wrong time, the Texas Rangers have fallen out of playoff position, going 6-15 in September, and drop from eight to 12 in the rankings, while the Baltimore Orioles have lost five in a row, and may have lost third baseman Manny Machado to a knee injury, to go from 11 to 15.

Toronto continues to languish in the lower third, down from 22 to 23, with a 4-9 record in their last 13 games and star slugger Edwin Encarnacion joins the increasingly long list on the Blue Jays' DL.
