TORONTO - Conservative estimates have injured shortstop Jose Reyes returning by the all star break.

But Reyes, who severely sprained his right ankle making an awkward slide on April 12 in Kansas City, has discarded the walking boot and could be back in the lineup by the end of June.

"We're now looking at how many weeks does it take before he's sprinting and running," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "Let's say it's two weeks before he's really getting involved and now you have a month to really get a lot of reps, batting practice, get into games."

Since the injury, Reyes has spent most of his time at home in New York City. He will join his teammates this weekend at Yankee Stadium and then accompany them back to Toronto.

Shortly, possibly as early as later this week, Reyes will begin to take batting practice off a tee and he will begin a throwing program. When his ankle is healthy enough to begin a running program, jogging to start, Reyes will do so.

The aim, on or close to June 1, is to have Reyes playing in simulated games and taking live batting practice. A minor league rehab assignment will follow and Reyes will progress slowly toward playing a full nine innings. It'll be like spring training, all over again.

"The fact that he's out of the boot and we're in the middle of May, six weeks from now doesn't seem like a stretch," said Anthopoulos.

Reyes, in 10 games prior to his injury, was hitting .395 with a .465 on-base percentage.
