SAN DIEGO, California - Pitcher Ramon Ortiz left in the third inning of the Blue Jays' 7-4, 11-inning win over the Padres with a suspected elbow injury on Sunday.

"It doesn't look good," said manager John Gibbons. "He'll go to Florida, get examined, get his MRI, then we'll have a better idea the next few days."

After delivering a pitch to San Diego's Chase Headley, Ortiz fell forward in discomfort. He stood up, walked to the back of the mound and with his left hand, slammed his glove to the ground. As Gibbons, head trainer George Poulis and teammates surrounded Ortiz, he could be seen pointing to his elbow.

He left the field in tears.

"I said a prayer right on the spot," said reliever Steve Delabar, who suffered a fractured elbow in 2009, which kept him out of professional baseball through to the end of 2010. "He threw his glove down. I've been through that before. You never want to see that, especially a guy like Ramon, such a good heart and he plays the game real hard and for that to happen today, that's just sad."

"What a kind of somber game for us with Ramon, what happened to him," said Mark DeRosa, whose home run in the 11th inning broke a 4-4 tie. "Watching him reflect on his career and hopefully he didn't throw his last pitch. That's our hope."

Ortiz, who turned 40 last week, is 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA in seven appearances, four starts, this season.
