Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis is set to play in his first big league exhibition game Friday.

His status for the start of the regular season has not been determined as he continues to rehab a right knee injury.

"We've got to be smart," manager John Gibbons said Monday. "If it costs us a couple extra weeks, so be it."

Travis appeared in 101 games last season, posting a .300 average with 11 home runs and and 50 RBI.

He made his spring debut in a minor-league scrimmage last week.

Travis, 26, is recovering from a pair of knee injury setbacks. The West Palm Beach, Florida native incurred a bone bruise last October that limited him to just two combined games in the American League Division Series against the Texas Rangers and the American League Championship Series versus the Cleveland Indians. He exited from Game 1 of the ALCS in the fifth inning and did not return. He also had off-season surgery on the same knee to remove cartilage.
