Charlie McAvoy will sign an amateur tryout contract to play with the Providence Bruins, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney confirmed Wednesday.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie noted Tuesday the Bruins will have to decide whether they want to burn a year off of McAvoy's entry-level contract if he is to play in any of the Bruins' remaining six games.

The 19-year-old defenceman scored five goals and added 21 assists in 38 games with Boston University this season. He scored two goals and added four assists in seven games while playing for the United States at the 2017 World Junior Championship.

The Long Beach, NY. native was selected 14th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.

He could join Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi, Matthew Tkachuk, Clayton Keller, Mikhail Sergachev and Jakob Chychrun as the eighth member of the draft class to play this season.

Keller, McAvoy's teammate at Boston University, made his debut for the Arizona Coyotes on Monday.
