It appears the return of the World Cup of Hockey may be delayed by one year.

Sources tell TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun the international tournament will likely return in September 2016 rather than 2015.

"We see international competition on the horizon; it's really just a question of what the format will be," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman during the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.

"The World Cup is a piece of an international presence that we want to have," added NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

The tournament will likely be a one-city event as opposed to having the games spread over multiple venues like the past. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has made it clear they would like to host the event. If two cities are required, Montreal is a possibility as co-host.

The NHL and NHLPA have yet to decide on participation at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
