Cardinals return to top of MLB Power Rankings

The St. Louis Cardinals have regained the No. 1 ranking in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, overtaking the Los Angeles Dodgers and holding off the upstart Houston Astros.

Seven wins in the past nine games is good enough for the Cardinals, who boast baseball's best record and run differential.

Among teams making big moves, the Cleveland Indians are up from 20 to 16 after winning five of six and the Oakland A's go from 25 to 19, after winning four of the past five.

Heading the other way, the Toronto Blue Jays' middle infield woes -- injury to Devon Travis, poor defensive play from Jose Reyes -- have contributed to them falling from 18 to 26. Five straight losses sends the Detroit Tigers from five to 11, and four consecutive losses was enough to knock the Seattle Mariners from 16 to 21.

The amazing thing about the Nationals, is that they were supposed to be so supremely deep when it came to starting pitching, but with a couple of starters on the DL, they've already been forced to summon Tanner Roark and A.J. Cole for the rotation.

He started slowly, but Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen is heating up, with a 1.201 OPS and 21 RBI in the past 25 games. He's not up to his level over the past three seasons, but the gap is closing rapidly and his production has helped the Pirates win 10 of the past 12 games.

For all the hype about the Cubs' young bats or a free agent pitcher like Jon Lester, one of their most valuable performers this year has been veteran RHP Jason Hammel, who re-signed with Chicago after going to Oakland last season, and has a 2.82 ERA and 0.90 WHIP.

After starting the year 9-12, the Twins have raced to the top of the AL Central with a 21-8 stretch. There's some smoke and mirrors involved, but 3B Trevor Plouffe is pulling his weight, with an .876 OPS over his past 20 games.

Losers of five straight, the Tigers have lost ground in the AL Central -- now 3.5-games behind Minnesota -- but they are a different Tigers team, running more with outfielders Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose, as well as SS Jose Iglesias, leading the way.

Hanging around, the Yankees have pulled into the AL East lead and are getting RHP Masahiro Tanaka back from the DL, at least for the time being -- with his arm troubles, it feels like he's being rented from Dr. James Andrews -- but one reason that the Yankees have managed to stay competitive is that RHP Adam Warren has delivered a 3.75 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 10 starts.

Maybe Bartolo Colon gets the notoriety for his build, long career etc. but the power arms that the Mets have at the top of the rotation -- Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and now Noah Syndergaard -- are devastating. Could still use a few more runs for support though.

Bad news for the Rangers as 3B Adrian Beltre suffered a thumb injury, but pretty good fallback option to bring up Joey Gallo from Double-A Frisco, where he was hitting .314 with a 1.061 OPS. Gallo's MLB debut was splashy too,  a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

For all the solid pitching that the Braves have received this season, what has happened to expected ace Julio Teheran? He's inducing weaker contact, overall, but more flyballs are leaving the park and more balls in play are turning into hits. Those ought to regress at some point.

Getting 1B Yonder Alonso back from the DL is probably a bigger deal than would be expected. He has as many walks (13) as strikeouts and his .439 on-base percentage ranks fourth among players with at least 50 plate appearances this season.

The closer position is a strange one, from team to team. In some cases, it's treated as volatile, ready to move a fresh arm in at a moment's notice, and then there's the Mariners, still rolling out Fernando Rodney and his 6.85 ERA.

It says something about the Red Sox desperation that their pitching hopes may hinge on 22-year-old LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, who had a 2.98 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, with 44 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket, before getting called to The Show.
