Boston Celtics forward Jonas Jerebko announced Tuesday that he has acquired beleaguered esports organization Renegades.

The organization, which has teams in League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Halo, has gone through a turbulent campaign after mismanagement accusations.

Former owner Chris Badawi was given a lifetime ban from the League Championship Series and told to relinquish ownership of the team last year and other former co-owner, Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles, was banned for a year after the 2016 Spring Split, forcing the sale of the club.

Jerebko is not the first professional athlete in a traditional sport to invest in esports. Three-time NBA champion Rick Fox owns Echo Fox and NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal and recently retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez are investors in NRG eSports.

In an interview with Dot Esports, Jerebko says his first focus is CS:GO, a game he has played since he was a child.

“It’s a whole new regime that we’ve structured,” Jerebko said. “It was the CS:GO team that made us want to buy Renegades at first, we would never have bought it without the opportunity to keep the team.”

The 29-year-old Swede has kept all the staff on the CS:GO side and replaced all other staff across the organization. He is also keeping the name and making some minor updates to the logo.

After one of the roughest seasons an esports organization has ever seen, Jerebko hopes to provide stability for his players and begin to rebuild the reputation the brand once had.

“I’ve had some bad experiences with organizations,” he said. “When I signed my first professional contract, they flew me to Italy and dropped me off at an apartment with a pocket full of cash. That was on a Thursday, and they said ‘see you on Monday.’ I’m 18-years-old in a different country.”

"So I’m just really trying to build my players up.”
