Barely a quarter of the way into the regular season and the CFL quarterback carousel is already in full swing.

A large part of that is a result of some early season injuries, but ineffectiveness has also contributed to the expected number of different QBs to have made a start – 14 – by the end of Week 7.

In Montreal, Kevin Glenn’s eye infection opened the door for a spot start for Rakeem Cato, a 31-7 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week.

Those Ticats have been led by backup Jeremiah Masoli through the first five weeks of the regular season as last year’s starter Zach Collaros recovers from a knee injury. Despite some inconsistencies, Masoli has been solid for Hamilton but is expected to give up the reigns to Collaros, who has returned to practice, after the team’s Week 6 bye.

And in Ottawa, Henry Burris’ Week 1 finger injury led to Trevor Harris’ early season Most Outstanding Player campaign. With Harris suffering a knee injury in the team’s 30-29 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders this past weekend – and Burris nearing a return from injury – it’s unclear who will be behind centre when Redblacks host the Toronto Argonauts next weekend.

Out west, Darian Durant’s ankle injury afforded Mitchell Gale a Week 5 start and could lead to another if Durant isn’t sufficiently recovered by Friday when the Roughriders travel to Montreal to take on the Alouettes.

And just earlier Sunday the Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced they’ll be making a switch at the position, giving Matt Nichols a shot behind centre after the team sputtered to a 1-4 start with Drew Willy at the helm.

It’s a common refrain in CFL circles you need two quarterbacks to be successful in the league; this year wasted no timing in proving that assertion true.
