And then there was two.
After 19 weeks of competition, the playoffs are set to begin and the year-end awards will be handed out during Grey Cup Week in Calgary.
The CFL on TSN crew put their heads together to come up with our version of the division finalists for the TSN.ca Most Outstanding Player.
In the East Division, the Alouettes enjoyed a terrific season and running back Avon Cobourne earned some high praise. Fred Reid was another running back who enjoyed a successful campaign in what was a tumultuous year in Winnipeg.
But to the surprise of no one, Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo emerged as TSN.ca's East Division nominee for Most Outstanding Player.
CFL on TSN analyst Matt Dunigan is impressed by Calvillo's ability to improve on his numbers from last year when he took home the Gibson's Finest Most Outstanding Player award.
"This season, Calvillo's QB efficiency rating is up from 107.2 in '08 to 108.4 in '09. His completion percentage is up from an incredible 69.2% last year to 72% this season, plus his average gain per pass is up as well."
"The biggest statistic and, quite frankly, the only one that matters is wins. Last year, Calvillo marshalled his team to 11 regular season victories and this year it was 15."
The West Division was much more competitive in the standings and when it came to deciding on a MOP finalist.
Henry Burris didn't have his best year in Calgary but he still amassed big numbers and a lot of wins. Darian Durant put the Roughriders on his back and carried them to the West Division title.
In Edmonton, Ricky Ray threw for almost 5,000 yards while Arkee Whitlock took over for Jesse Lumsden in Week 1 and filled his shoes admirably. For the Lions, rookie Martell Mallett stood out and Geroy Simon was his usual, dependable self.
But it was Joffrey Reynolds who earned the honour of being TSN.ca's MOP finalist for the West Division.
CFL on TSN analyst Glen Suitor has always been impressed with Reynolds but feels that this season has been his best.
"Reynolds has been a consistent performer for many years but in 2009 he has taken his game to a new level," said Suitor. "His numbers speak for themselves but he is also one of the best blocking backs in the league and catches the ball out of the backfield as well as anyone in the CFL."
"But maybe what has been most impressive about Reynolds is the professional way in which he carries himself both on and off the field. It is not about flash and the show, he is a hard-nosed football player that may be the best downhill runner in the CFL since Mike Pringle. He doesn't say much and doesn't do a dance in the end zone, he just rolls up his sleeves and goes to work game in and game out."
