MONTREAL -- McGill University has lost one of its Hall of Fame football stars.
Willie Lambert, who played six seasons for the McGill Redmen and 10 games for the Montreal Alouettes, died Saturday after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 72.
Lambert was named to the league all-star team four times, earned all-conference honours in 1962 at both running back and defensive back, and held the McGill all-time scoring record with 20 touchdowns, which stood for 14 years.
Lambert helped McGill to the Yates Cup and Churchill Bowl titles in 1960. Three seasons later, he earned the Omega trophy as league MVP.
Lambert was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and attended training camp but returned to Montreal to complete his degree in dentistry. He played 10 games with the Alouettes in 1964 before a broken hand forced him to retire.
Lambert is survived by wife Diane, sons Timmy and John, daughters Laurie and Shawna, and nine grandchildren.
