Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray hopes to go through drills on Thursday as he recuperates from a strained MCL that he suffered 10 days ago.

According to head coach Scott Milanovich, Ray threw the ball lightly during a closed practice on Wednesday.

But it was another quarterback who drew some attention after Argonauts practice as some defensive players took issue with the comments of Buck Pierce of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Pierce suffered a mild concussion after a violent hit by Argonauts linebacker Brandon Isaac and called the hit a cheap shot on Tuesday.

"You got a guy like Buck Pierce, who, unfortunately, goes down often," said defensive captain Jordan Younger. "He has concussion issues and maybe he has some decisions to make, but we see it as a clean hit."

Younger compared the injury problems of Pierce to the relatively healthy Anthony Calvillo and the future Hall of Famer's ability to avoid the big hit.

"Anthony Calvillo does a really good job of protecting himself when he throws the ball," added Younger. "He makes it a point not to get hit in the head, he avoids those collisions. Some quarterbacks don't avoid those collisions and put it in the hands of the CFL."

While Younger admitted the defence gameplans for more than the quarterback, he stopped short of saying the defence deliberately goes out to hurt the opposition pivots.

"Are we aware that he may go down, because he has a history of going down? Yes. We prepare for the second quarterback, because Buck Pierce has that history, but that's just covering all your bases."

Pierce practiced with the Blue Bombers on Wednesday and, if he passes his final test in the concussion protocol, he may play on Monday against Montreal.
