CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders signed linebacker Karl McCartney to a contract extension Tuesday.

The 25-year-old McCartney, in his third season with Calgary, had a team-high 23 special-teams tackles in 2012 and added six more in the playoffs. McCartney, who played collegiately at Saint Mary's and was a 2010 fifth-round draft pick, also recorded nine defensive tackles and a sack.

"Our special teams were very strong in 2012 and Karl was a important contributor to that phase of the game," head coach/GM John Hufnagel said in a statement. "I look forward to seeing Karl continue to excel in that department and also to becoming more of an integral part of our defence."

McCartney played in all 18 regular-season games and three playoff contests last year after being limited to eight appearances in 2011 due to injuries. He had a team-leading 19 special-teams tackles as a rookie in 2010.
