WATERLOO, Ont. -- Joe Paopao has been named the Warriors' full-time football coach after the University of Waterloo removed the interim tag from his job Wednesday.

Paopao was the team's offensive co-ordinator and assistant head coach prior to becoming the team's interim head coach for the 2012 season.

"Joe did a tremendous job for our program and student-athletes last year during a vital period of transition," athletic director Bob Copeland said in a statement. "He has brought a new attitude and positive momentum to the locker-room, and has earned the confidence of our players, administration, and alumni."

Paopao led the Warriors to a 2-6 record last season. One of the team's wins was a 48-29 upset victory over the Windsor Lancers in the season finale.

Paopao said he is excited to begin the 2013 season as one of the youngest teams in the CIS gains experience and depth through recruiting.

"We have tremendous student-athletes and it will be my privilege to lead these fine young men on and off the field," Paopao said. "Last year was a sign of things to come and with the addition of several highly touted recruits and a core group of veterans returning we will continue to get better each and every day."

Paopao has an extensive CFL coaching and playing resume. Most recently, he was the offensive co-ordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2006. He was head coach of the Ottawa Renegades for five season before that. He also coached with Edmonton, B.C., and Winnipeg.

Paopao's 12-year CFL playing career began in B.C. in 1978 where the former quarterback led the Lions in passing for three consecutive seasons. He set a CFL record in 1979 for most pass completions in a single game.
