Veteran CFL linebacker Rod Davis is heading back to Alberta, but this time he'll be wearing red and white, after signing with the Calgary Stampeders on Monday.

Davis spent the first three seasons of his CFL career with the Edmonton Eskimos before joining the Montreal Alouettes last year.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to be a Stampeder," said Davis. "It's a team I know very well from my days in Edmonton and all the games we played against Calgary. It's great to get a chance now to wear the red and white."

Davis is a four-year CFL veteran who recorded 35 tackles, four special-teams tackles, five sacks, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions in 16 games for the Alouettes in 2012.

For his career Davis has 184 tackles, 26 special-teams tackles, 10 sacks, and eight interceptions in 57 regular-season games. "With Rod having spent the majority of his career up the road in Edmonton, I am very familiar with his abilities," said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "He's an excellent addition to our team and I look forward to seeing him perform in a Stampeders uniform."

Prior to coming to the CFL, Davis played three seasons in the National Football League and played a total of 40 games — 39 for the Minnesota Vikings and one for Carolina Panthers.

He has also played for the Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Football League. Prior to turning pro, Davis starred at Southern Mississippi and was twice a first-team all-Conference USA player.

The Stampeders also released import defensive lineman Anwar Stewart and import receiver/kick returner Jason Armstead.

Stewart joined the Stampeders as a free agent last October. In four games with the team last season he recorded nine tackles and four sacks. Stewart began his CFL career with Calgary in 2001 before spending the next 10 seasons with Montreal.

Armstead, a nine-year CFL veteran, signed with Calgary in September 2012.
