Defensive lineman Khreem Smith has signed a contract extension with the BC Lions, the team announced Thursday.

Smith spent the past two seasons with the Lions, recording 12 sacks and five forced fumbles through 32 games.

Last year, the 34-year-old was fifth in the CFL with seven sacks in 17 games. Smith also added 20 tackles and three forced fumbles.

“Khreem has quietly developed into a key veteran presence on the field,” vice president of football operations and GM Wally Buono said in a team release. “He has great instincts as a pass rusher and gives our defence an added dimension.”

“Khreem has been a great addition to our club and has become a key part of a talented defensive front,” Lions head coach Mike Benevides said in the release. “He has a unique ability to make big plays at key times and I am very pleased to have him with us.”

Smith was set to enter the option year of his previous deal before signing the extension.
