The Rouge: Are the Stamps still contenders with Glenn at QB?

Heading into the regular season, the Calgary Stampeders were firmly earmarked as Grey Cup contenders with Drew Tate - the team's golden boy - leading the way.

And things started out well with Calgary crushing the Montreal Alouettes 38-10 on Canada Day Kickoff Weekend.

But then Tate dislocated his non-throwing shoulder, likely ending his season and Calgary's results have been a mixed bag since.

The team's hopes are now pinned primarily on veteran Kevin Glenn; Stamps fans hopeful he can uphold the team's lofty pre-season expectations.

And with a couple starts now under his belt, The Rouge now looks at the Stamps as led by Glenn and asks you if they're still Grey Cup contenders - or if the prospects should be lowered.

The optimist would point to Glenn's stellar Week 4 performance this past week against Saskatchewan. He finished the game 27-42 for 385 yards and four touchdowns in Calgary's 41-38 overtime win. More impressive was Glenn shouldering a 17-point fourth quarter comeback to force overtime against the previously undefeated Roughriders.

The pessimist, however, would recall Glenn's Week 3 showing in Montreal just a week earlier. Glenn's poor clock management and interception late in the game allowed for the Alouettes' comeback win.

That type of inconsistency has followed Glenn his entire career. He's the same quarterback who was named the East Division nominee for Most Outstanding Player and led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the Grey Cup in 2007 (he missed the game to injury), only to be released one season later.

In Glenn's three seasons in Hamilton, he helped the team emerge from the basement of the league standings into relevance and even won a playoff game against the Alouettes in 2011. But it was Glenn's inability to push the Ticats over the hump that led to his offseason trade to Calgary.

And now, because of Tate's injury, the 33-year-old finds himself with another opportunity to lead a team over the hump.

The Rouge asks: With Glenn at the helm, are the Stampeders still legitimate contenders for the Grey Cup?
