REGINA -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed kicker Ricky Schmitt on Friday, a day after kicker Jamie Boreham announced his retirement.

The six-foot-three, 213-pound Schmitt spent the 2012 NFL pre-season with the Arizona Cardinals, punting 12 times for a 44.8-yard average.

The 27-year-old Virginia native began his pro career when he signed an undrafted free-agent contract with the Cardinals in 2007. He can also handle placekicking duties.

Schmitt has also had NFL stints with San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Tennessee and San Diego.
