REGINA -- A final attempt to hold a referendum on a new football stadium for the Saskatchewan Roughriders has been kicked out of bounds by Regina city council.

Nine people came before council Monday night to argue that people in Regina should be allowed to have their say on the proposed $278-million stadium.

They had circulated a petition in recent months calling for a referendum, but supporters collected only half the required 20,000 signatures needed to trigger a vote.

The speakers told council that the city has other pressing needs, but in the end councillors decided not to take any action on the petition.

Councillor Shawn Fraser says he was still impressed by the number of people who signed the petition and doesn't think the effort should be ignored.

Fraser says he will look at lowering the threshold needed to hold a referendum, which is 10 per cent of Regina's population.
