With Drew Tate expected to be healthy and ready to go for the start of next year's training camp, the looming question in Calgary this off-season becomes, would Kevin Glenn be content to return as the Stampeders' backup QB?
"I don't know if I can answer that question right now," Glenn said two days after Calgary's loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the 100th Grey Cup. "There's a lot right now that's going through my mind as far as the game and the season."
The story is well documented now. After Tate succumbed to a shoulder injury early in the regular season, Glenn led Calgary to a 12-6 record and home playoff date. Tate returned for the post-season but once again was lost to injury, and Glenn came in to lead the Stamps to the Grey Cup game before falling to the Argos.
While Glenn was non-committal about his impending decision, he did stress how much he enjoyed his first season with the Stamps.
"I really, truly enjoyed playing with this team. Sometimes you don't always get that. That could be the most important thing," Glenn said.
"I believe here we do have an all-around team and sometimes that plays bigger than other situations."
Teammates understand Glenn's predicament, but said they've made it clear they'd love to have the veteran back in Calgary next season.
"Personally, for selfish reasons I would love to see him back," said slotback Nik Lewis. "But as a player, we want to play. We want to compete to play and we want to play.
"Hopefully he makes the best decision for himself and his family and whatever that is, there will be no malice because this season was special for us. I hope for selfish reasons that he's here."
Regardless of his ultimate decision, after his impressive season Glenn feels he's worthy of one of the eight starting jobs in the CFL.
"I would be lying if I said I didn't think I was a starting quarterback in this league," Glenn said. "If you're a quarterback and you don't think that, then something's wrong."
But with the Grey Cup appearance still fresh in their memories, and a long off-season to contemplate his future, Glenn says that for now he's just reflecting on the 2012 season, one he considers a success.
"I'm very happy as far as what I accomplished this year. It didn't end up the way I wanted it to, but I'm still proud. I'm proud of myself and my team."
