Naylor: Tim Tebow to the CFL? Not so fast

It's been a rough year for the quarterback development of Tim Tebow - after throwing 271 passes as a sophomore just a year ago.

He's been allowed to attempt just eight in this - his third NFL season. And all of this has raised doubts over whether there will be a quarterback home for him next season with the New York Jets.

Or any other NFL team for that matter.

But if Tebow is out of NFL quarterback options, he could look north - where his CFL rights are owned by the Montreal Alouettes.

Tebow is well-known to Montreal head coach Marc Trestman, who worked with him during the months leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft, where he was a first-round pick of the Denver Broncos. Trestman is said to have been impressed.

And while the Als don't need a quarterback for next season, 40-year-old Anthony Calvillo is nearing the end with no heir currently apparent.

As to how Tebow might fare in the CFL, there is much debate.

In fact, the topic was a hot one on Twitter this week among some current and former CFL players.

Tebow's size and running ability would make him a huge challenge for the league's often undersized linebackers and defensive backs.

And while his perceived lack of accuracy might be less of a handicap on a bigger field with more open space, there are still the questions about his ability to read defences at the pro level - which might be worse in the pass-happy Canadian game with an extra defensive back on the field.

And Tebow still has two years remaining on his current NFL contract, which means unless he's cut by the Jets or another team, the debate about Tebow in the CFL is moot.

But like all things concerning Tebow, don't expect it to go quiet.
