Free agent running back Brandon Whitaker told the Montreal Alouettes he is going to wait to be cleared medically in May before working out for NFL teams in hopes of landing a job south of the border.

Whitaker suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last September and missed the rest of the season.

With Chad Kackert deciding to re-sign with the Toronto Argonauts, Whitaker is the most sought-after running back available in the free agent pool, if healthy.

The Baylor product has spent four seasons with the Alouettes, rushing for 2,274 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also amassed 1,288 yards receiving with 12 touchdowns.

His best season came in 2011 when he rushed for almost 1,400 yards.
