WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg judge has granted bail to a former Canadian Football League player charged in an alleged multimillion-dollar fraud scheme.

David Lorne Pitcher, who is 46, can return to his home in B.C. pending his trial on charges relating to a Manitoba-based investigation.

Pitcher applied for release late last week after being held in custody in Manitoba since his arrest last month in Vernon on several charges.

Provincial court Judge Anne Krahn agreed to release Pitcher on several conditions, including that he post a $50,000 cash bond, abide by a nightly curfew, report weekly to Vernon RCMP and surrender his passport.

Mounties allege Pitcher bilked investors in B.C. and Alberta out of more than $5 million between Jan. 1, 2007, and Jan. 30, 2012.

The allegations against Pitcher -- a former slotback in the 1990s for both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders -- have not been proven.
