The CFL Players’ Association announced the launching of a new campaign Thursday, called #1PlayAway, which they say aims to draw awareness to the current lack of health and safety coverage afforded to pro football players.

The CFLPA is also at Saskatchewan legislature Thursday, during Mark’s CFL Week, trying to draw awareness to their campaign’s goals.

In a CFLPA release, the association states that “Because players are not covered under the workplace compensation system provided in all other Canadian workplaces, they must resort to their collective agreement for health coverage,” adding that “the coverage provided is nowhere near adequate.”

The CFLPA also argues players need long-term assistance for serious injuries or chronic conditions, because coverage provided lasts only up to 12 months after an injury is suffered.
