WHL: Hitmen beat Broncos for 17th win in a row on home ice

CALGARY - The Calgary Hitmen are a tough opponent to play anywhere, but they're particularly deadly on home ice.

Brett Sonne scored twice and set up another as the Hitmen posted their 17th win in a row at home with  a 7-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.

Both Joel Broda and Tomas Karpov scored their first goals for the Hitmen (38-6-1-1) since being acquired in a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors on Thursday. Broda also had three assists in the game as did linemate Brandon Kozun. Paul Postma, Michael Stone and Ian Shultz each had a goal and an assist, while Carson McMillan had a pair of helpers.

In other WHL action, it was: Regina 3 Edmonton 0; Seattle 5 Prince George 2; and Everett 5 Portland 4 (SO).

At Calgary, Cody Eakin, Jan Dalecky and Dillon Wagner scored for the Broncos (25-20-0-1), who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and also led 3-2 in the second before the Hitmen responded with five straight goals. Taylor Vause chipped in with a pair of assists for Swift Current.

Calgary goalie Martin Jones made 20 saves to extend his winning streak to 11 games, while his Swift Current counterpart Morgan Clark stopped 27 of 34 shots at the other end.

Pats 3 Oil Kings 0

At Regina, Linden Rowat made 30 stops to help the Pats shut out the Oil Kings and ended a six-game losing streak.

Brett Leffler, Tomas Hricina  and Jesse Dudas scored for Regina (20-21-1-4) .

Torrie Jung stopped 32 shots for  Edmonton (20-21-2-4).

Thunderbirds 5 Cougars 2

At Kent, Wash., Lindsay Nielsen scored a pair of goals to lead Seattle to a win over Prince George.

Jim O'Brien, Jeremy Boyer and Erik Fleming also scored for Seattle (18-21-1-3).

Justin Maylan and Cody Hobbs replied for Prince George (16-27-0-2).

Silvertips 5 Winter Hawks 4 (SO)

At Portland, Ore., Tyler Maxwell scored the only goal in the shootout to help Everett down the Winter Hawks.

Kellan Tochkin had a power play goal and two assists to lead the Silvertips.

Everett (20-17-5) also had a power play goal from Tyler Maxwell, with Dan Iwanski and Zack Dailey scoring at even strength.

Travis Bobbee, Radim Valchar, Chris Francis, all on the power play, and Riley Boychuk replied for Portland (12-27-1-2).
