WHL: Hitmen strike on power-play in win over Cougars

Martin Jones made 25 saves and the Calgary Hitmen scored three power-play goals in the second period to record a 6-0 win over the Prince George Cougars in Western Hockey League action Tuesday.

The Hitmen (56-8-3-1), who lead the WHL in points with 116, got goals from Kyle Bortis, Brandon Kozun, Keith Seabrook, Jason MacDonald, Bostjan Golicic, Carson McMillan and Joel Broda, who connected for his WHL-leading 50th goal of the season.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Brandon 4 Saskatoon 3; Red Deer 3 Kootenay 1; Medicine Hat 5 Moose Jaw 1; Portland 3 Everett 2; and Spokane 4 Seattle 2.

At Prince George, B.C., Jones earned his sixth shutout and league-leading 43rd win of the season.

Cougars goaltender Kevin Armstrong blocked 38 shots as Prince George (24-40-0-2) lost for the seventh time in eight games.

Wheat Kings 4 Blades 3

At Saskatoon, Jay Fehr scored a pair of goals as Brandon beat the Blades.

Paul Ciarelli and Mark Stone also scored for the Wheat Kings (44-18-3-1), who moved within six points of the Blades for first place in the East Division.

Milan Kytnar scored all three goals for Saskatoon (47-16-3-1).

Rebels 3 Ice 1

At Cranbrook, B.C., Red Deer goalie Darcy Kuemper made 33 saves in win over Kootenay.

Landon Ferraro had two goals for Red Deer (22-34-1-9) while Adam Kambeitz also scored.

Dominik Pacovsky replied for Kootenay (31-27-2-6).

Tigers 5 Warriors 1

At Medicine Hat, Alta., Linden Vey scored twice as part of a four-point night to lead the Tigers over Moose Jaw.

Sean Ringrose also had a pair of goals for the Tigers (35-25-4-3), while Mark Isherwoodd had a single tally and Tyler Ennis recorded three assists.

Jason Bast opened the scoring for the Warriors (18-45-1-2).

Winter Hawks 3 Silvertips 2

At Portland, Killian Hutt scored with just over a minute remaining in the game to secure a victory for the Winter Hawks over Everett.

Portland (17-44-2-2) also had goals from Joel Ridgeway and Radim Valchar. Both goals were assisted by Colin Reddin.

Shane Harper and Markus McCrea replied for Everett (26-32-7-2).

Chiefs 4 Thunderbirds 2

At Kent, Wash., Drayson Bowman scored two goals to lead Spokane over Seattle.

Mitch Wahl and Levko Koper also scored for the Chiefs (42-20-0-3).

Jim O'Brien and David Richard replied for the Thunderbirds (31-30-1-4).
