MONTREAL -- Guy Carbonneau is returning to his hockey roots.
The Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League confirmed Monday that the former Montreal Canadiens player and head coach will lead the team until at least the end of the season.
Carbonneau, who spent four seasons with the Sagueneens as a player in junior, compiled a 124-83-23 regular-season record as coach of the Canadiens. He was fired with 16 games left in the 2008-09 season. Carbonneau was 5-7 in the playoffs with Montreal.
The 50-year-old native of Sept-Iles, Que., played 18 seasons in the NHL, including 12 with the Habs.
Carbonneau, who worked in television after being let go by the Canadiens, succeeds Richard Martel, who was fired last Wednesday.
