A win over a state rival helped the Plymouth Whalers keep pace atop the Ontario Hockey League's West Division.

Matt Mahalak made 36 saves to lead the Whalers to a 4-1 victory over the Saginaw Spirit on Tuesday.

Ottawa Senators' prospect Stefan Noesen scored twice for the Whalers (9-5-3), including the game's first and last goals.

The victory moved the Whalers back into a tie with the Sarnia Sting for the division lead, with Plymouth holding a game in hand.

After Noesen opened the scoring at 7:50 of the first period, Garret Ross answered for Saginaw (6-10-2) just 16 seconds later.

That would be the closest the Spirit would get as Anaheim Ducks' draft pick Rickard Rakell scored at the end of the first period for Plymouth.

Matt Mistele and Noesen added goals in the third period for the Whalers.

Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Kitchener 3, Mississauga 2; Kingston 7, Ottawa 4; and Barrie 5, Peterborough 3.

At Plymouth, Mich., the game was held in the afternoon as many area schools were off due to the U.S. election.

Rakell added two assists for Plymouth, which held the Spirit to 0-for-6 on the power play.

Detroit Red Wings' prospect Jake Paterson finished with 35 saves for Saginaw.

Rangers 3, Steelheads 2

At Kitchener, Ont., Radek Faksa scored the decisive goal as the Rangers (11-5-2) held on to beat Mississauga (11-5-1).

Frontenacs 7, 67's 4

At Ottawa, seven different players scored for Kingston (8-9-0), which beat the 67's (6-9-2) at Scotiabank Place for the second time in eight days.

---

Colts 5, Petes 3

At Peterborough, Ont., Ryan O'Connor scored twice to help Barrie (13-4-1) beat the Petes (4-11-3) in a game that featured two penalty shots.
