WHL: Montgomery's hat trick leads Ice to victory over Hitmen

CALGARY -- Brock Montgomery had a hat trick and Mackenzie Skapski stopped all 17 shots he faced as the Kootenay Ice shut out the Calgary Hitmen 4-0 in Western Hockey League action Monday.

Zach McPhee had a goal and an assist for the Ice (5-12-1), which snapped an eight-game losing streak. Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau chipped in with two assists each.

With the setback, the Hitmen (13-5-3) saw their winning streak end at five games.

The Ice scored twice on eight chances with the man advantage, while the Hitmen went 0 for 6 on the power play.

Rookie Hitmen netminder Mack Shields made 27 saves in a losing cause.

Montgomery opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the first period and then added a power-play goal at 13:20.

Montgomery then scored on a two-man advantage in the third period before McPhee rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal.

Jay Merkley scored a pair for the Hurricanes to up his total to 11 goals on the season helping Lethbridge bounce back from Saturday's shutout loss to Regina and keep pace in the Central Division.

The Hurricanes took four of a possible six points on their recent road trip.
