WHL: Leipsic has three assists as Winterhawks blank Giants

Brendan Leipsic set up all three of his club's goals as the Portland Winterhawks blanked the visiting Vancouver Giants 3-0 on Wednesday night in Western Hockey League action.

The 18-year-old forward has recorded nine straight multi-point games and in those nine games he has six goals and 22 points.

Brendan Burke stopped 18 shots for his first WHL shutout.

Nicolas Petan scored twice and added an assist for the Winterhawks (18-4-1) and Ty Rattie had a goal and an assist.

Petan has 13 goals and 40 points in 23 games, which places him third in league scoring.

Payton Lee made 37 saves for the Giants (7-16-0), who have dropped three straight and own the worst record in the WHL.

Portland went 0-for-3 on the power play while Vancouver failed to score on its only chance with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Prince Albert 3, Moose Jaw 2; Calgary 3, Lethbridge 2; Regina 2, Kamloops 1 (OT); Seattle 7, Kootenay 4 and Spokane 3, Everett 1.

At Portland, Ore., Rattie opened the scoring for the Winterhawks at 12:51 of the first period.

Petan doubled his club's lead at 16:03 of the second period and in the final minute of the third period he added an empty-net goal to secure a Portland victory.

At Moose Jaw, Sask., Mark McNeill scored the winning goal late in the third period and Luke Siemens stopped 29 shots as Prince Albert (16-7-2) edged the Warriors (8-10-6) for its third win in four outings.

At Calgary, Alta., Jake Virtanen scored the winning goal with 27 seconds left in the third period and Jaynen Rissling had a goal and an assist as the Hitmen (16-5-3) handed Lethbridge (13-12-2) its fourth straight defeat.

Pats 2 Blazers 1 (OT)

At Kamloops, B.C., Teagan Sacher stopped 40 shots and Lane Scheidl scored twice, including the winning goal 2:07 into extra time, as Regina (11-12-3) edged the Blazers (19-5-2).

Thunderbirds 7 Ice 4

At Kent, Wash., six Thunderbirds' players recorded a multi-point game including Riley Sheen and Alexander Delnov, who had a goal and three assists apiece, as Seattle (11-11-1) downed Kootenay (7-13-1).

Chiefs 3 Silvertips 1

At Spokane, Wash., Todd Fiddler scored twice, Reid Gow had a goal and an assist and Brenden Kichton had two assists as the Chiefs (16-7-0) handed Everett (9-15-2) its seventh loss in 10 outings.
