OHL: Gibson lifts Rangers over Spitfires before WJHC duty

John Gibson is ready to play for the Americans at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Gibson made 37 saves as the Kitchener Rangers defeated the Windsor Spitfires 4-1 on Thursday in Ontario Hockey League play.

The 19-year-old goaltender was making his return to the Rangers after missing five games with a hip injury. He leaves Saturday to join Team USA in preparation for the world juniors in Ufa, Russia.

Domenic Alberga opened the scoring in the game for the Rangers (19-9-4) with a power-play goal nine minutes into the first period Kris Grant, Curtis Meighan and former Spitfire Nick Czinder had the other goals for Kitchener.

Chris Marchese had the lone goal for the Spitfires (14-13-5).

The Rangers were without six players, including team captain Ryan Murphy, who is with the Canadian National Junior Hockey Team, and leading scorer Matt Puempel, out with a shoulder injury.

Aberga's goal was his second of the season while Grant, Meighan and Czinder all scored their first goals of the campaign.

Grant, playing in just his fifth game of the season, scored his first career OHL goal in the second period after Marchese had scored to tie the game 1-1.

Pavelka made 34 saves for the Spitfires, who saw their winning streak snapped at four games.

Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Brampton 4 Peterborough 1; Erie 4 Niagara 2 and Oshawa 3 Barrie 1.

At Peterborough, Ont., Jake Smith stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced to lead Brampton (16-13-5) past the Petes (8-21-4).

At St. Catherine's, Ont., Connor Crisp had the hat trick as Erie (9-19-5) downed Niagara (19-12-2),

At Barrie, Ont., Scott Laughton had a goal and two assists as Oshawa (18-12-3) knocked off the Colts (21-9-1), who were without the services of top scorers Mark Scheifele and Anthony Camara. Both of made Canada's junior national team earlier Thursday.
