QMJHL: McDonald, Titan blank visiting Phoenix

Mason McDonald earned his first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League shutout on Sunday as the Acadie-Bathurst Titan blanked the visiting Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-0.

The 16-year-old rookie stopped all 31 shots he faced for his first victory since Nov. 4th, a span of nine starts. McDonald is now 3-6-3 with a 4.33 goals-against average and .890 save percentage on a team that has the third-most goals scored against in the entire QMJHL.

Michael Beaudry scored twice for the Titan (19-26-6), who halted their six-game winless streak, and Robert Pelletier had the other.

Beaudry, who started the season as a member of the Val-d'Or Foreurs, has 12 goals and 22 points in 17 games with Acadie-Bathurst since being acquired on Dec. 11th. in a trade. The 20-year-old forward 27 goals and 64 points in 49 combined games this season, which is good for ninth in league scoring.

Jacob Gervais-Chouinard turned away 36-of-39 shots in a losing cause for Sherbrooke (14-29-6), who fell to 7-18-0 on the road.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Moncton 6, Quebec 2; Drummondville 6, Gatineau 3; Baie-Comeau 7, Shawinigan 3 and Val-d'Or 5, Chicoutimi 2.

At Bathurst, N.B., Pelletier opened the scoring at 18:31 of the first period and Beaudry added another 50 seconds later to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.

The Titan outshot the Phoenix 16-5 in the second period and Beaudry added his second of the game at 9:44 on the power play.

Sherbrooke managed 17 shots against McDonald in the third period, however he stopped each one for his third win of the season.

At Moncton, N.B., Dmitrij Jaskin scored three times, extending his point streak to 11 games, and Alex Dubeau stopped 29-of-31 shots as the Wildcats (32-16-1) defeated Quebec (28-17-3) for their eighth win in a row.

At Gatineau, Que., Jeremie Malouin had his second four-goal game of the season and Cole Hoawes chipped in with three assists as Drummondville (26-18-4) ended its three-game slide by doubling up the Olympiques (21-24-3).

At Shawinigan, Que., Petr Straka, Carl Gelinas and Felix Girard combined for five goals and nine points as Baie-Comeau (34-12-4) crushed the Cataractes (10-32-5), who have dropped four straight contests.

Foreurs 5 Sagueneens 2

At Val-d'Or, Que., Anton Zlobin scored once and set up two others and Philippe Trudeau earned his second win since being acquired from the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles as the Foreurs (25-20-3) downed Chicoutimi (24-23-4).
