Phillip Danault gave the Victoriaville Tigres a glimpse of what they once had.

The 19-year-old scored at 16:58 of overtime and set up two others in regulation as the Moncton Wildcats edged his former club 3-2 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff action.

Danault, who is a native of Victoriaville, Que., spent his first two seasons in the QMJHL with the Tigres and the first half of this year until he was shipped to Moncton at the trade dead line in January. In 155 games with his hometown club, Danault registered 55 goals and 183 points.

Alex Saulnier had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats, who evened the first-round series at one game each, while his brother Allain chipped in with two assists.

Rookie Ivan Barbashev scored his first-career playoff goal to round out Moncton's offence.

Dmitrij Jaskin, who led the Wildcats in regular-season scoring with 46 goals and 99 points in 51 games, was absent from the scoresheet for the second game in a row. The last time the forward was held pointless in back-to-back games was way back in October as he finished the season by recording at least one point in 42-of-47 contests.

Philippe Halley scored both goals for the Tigres.

Moncton's Alex Dubeau made 27 saves for the win. Victoriaville's Brandon Whitney gave his club another chance to win as he stopped 55-of-58 shots in a losing cause. In Game 1, Whitney stopped 37 shots for a 3-0 victory.

The Wildcats went 2 for 7 on the power play while the Tigres scored once on seven chances with the man advantage.

Game 3 is set for March 26 when Victoriaville hosts Moncton at the Colisee Desjardins.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Baie-Comeau 8, Sherbrooke 1; Gatineau 5, Rimouski 3; Halifax 2, Saint John 1; Val-d'Or 8, P.E.I. 3; Quebec 5, Chicoutimi 1 and Rouyn-Noranda 3, Drummondville 2.

At Moncton, N.B., Alex Saulnier opened the scoring with a power-play goal only 34 seconds into the first period, however Halley responded for Victoriaville at 4:56 to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes of action.

Barbashev scored the only goal of the second as the Wildcats outshot the Tigres 30-13 through two periods and carried a 2-1 lead into the third.

With Jaskin in the box for slashing, Halley tied the game at 14:34 of the third.
