OHL: Whalers manage just 17 shots, but beat Battalion in OT

NORTH BAY, Ont. -- Carter Sandlak scored at 2:19 into overtime to lead the Plymouth Whalers to a 3-2 victory over the North Bay Battalion on Thursday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Sandlak's goal came on one of just 17 shots by the Whalers.

Ryan Hartman opened the scoring for Plymouth (5-6-0) with a power-play goal 11:29 into the first period, and Danny Vanderwiel got the equalizer for the Whalers at 10:02 of the third.

Dylan Blujus scored for the Battalion (6-6-1) in the second period, and Vincent Praplan put the home team in front early in the third.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 33 saves for Plymouth, while Brendan O'Neill made 14 saves for North Bay.

ICEDOGS 7 67'S 4

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Anthony DiFruscia had a natural hat trick in the second period to lead Niagara to its win over Ottawa.

Carter Verhaeghe also had a big game for the IceDogs (4-4-2), as he opened the scoring with his ninth and tenth goals of the season, and added a pair of assists.

Eric Ming and Jesse Graham got the other Niagara goals.

Nevin Guy had two goals and an assist for the 67's (5-6-0). Ryan Van Stralen and Brett Gustavsen got the other Ottawa goals.

Christopher Festarini made 24 saves for the Ice Dogs. Philippe Trudeau stopped 19 of 25 shots in nearly 35 minutes for Ottawa, while teammate Jacob Blair stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced.

STORM 3 SPITFIRES 2

WINDSOR, Ont. -- Scott Kosmachuk scored his seventh goal of the season to lead Guelph over Windsor.

Kosmachuk's goal, scored at 13:51 of the third period, sealed the deal for the Storm (7-3-0) after the visitors had given up a two-goal lead.

Pius Suter and Brock McGinn also scored for Windsor and Kosmachuk chipped in with an assist.

Josh Ho-Sang had a goal and an assist for the Spitfires (4-6-0) and Kerby Rychel scored the other Windsor goal.

Guelph goaltender Justin Nichols made 32 saves on 34 shots while his Spitfires counterpart, Jordan DeKort, stopped 32 of 35 shots.

PETES 4 STEELHEADS 3

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- Stephen Pierog scored a goal and an assist to lead Peterborough over Mississauga.

Steve Lorentz, Nick Ritchie, and Connor Boland also scored for the Petes (6-3-1), while Clark Seymour added two assists on the night.

Austin Gerhart scored a power-play goal and added an assist for the Steelheads (5-6-0), and Trevor Carrick and Sean Day rounded out Mississauga's offence.

Andrew D'Agostino made 34 saves in the victory while Spencer Martin stopped 30 of 34 shots in defeat.

GREYHOUNDS 1 COLTS 0

BARRIE, Ont. -- Matt Murray made 38 saves and Blake Speers scored in the first period to lead Sault Ste. Marie to its victory over Barrie.

Speers' goal was his third of the season, and was assisted by Sergey Tolchinsky and Darnell Nurse.

Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 28 saves for the Colts (3-6-1).

The Greyhounds improved to 7-1-1 on the season.

SPIRIT 6 STING 3

SARNIA, Ont. -- The Sting rallied from a 3-1 deficit and scored five unanswered goals in their win over Saginaw.

Nikolay Goldobin had two goals and an assist and Nikita Korostelev also scored twice for Sarnia (3-6-1). Anthony DeAngelo added to his numbers with a goal and three assists, while Patrick White also scored for the Sting.

Kristoff Kontos, Zach Bratina and Mitchell Stephens replied for Saginaw (5-5-2).

The teams combined for seven goals in the second period after a scoreless first.

Taylor Dupuis made 26 saves for the Sting, while Jake Paterson stopped 23 shots for Saginaw.
