OTTAWA (CIS) – Brittany Seidler, a field hockey player from the University of Guelph, and Adrian Pena, a soccer player from York University, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week on Wednesday.
Seidler, a fourth-year arts student from Oliver, Ont., went on a scoring rampage last Saturday when she netted eight goals in two games to help the Gryphons (3-0-1) remain undefeated in conference play. The 5-foot-6 forward, who was named a CIS all-Canadian each of the past two seasons, scored five times in an 8-0 shutout against Queen's – including the game-winner just two minutes into the contest – and then added a hat trick in a 6-0 win over McGill.
Cape Breton soccer player Tara Rogers, Laval rugby player Claudiane Renaud and UBC soccer player Rachel Ramsden were also nominated for the women's award.
Pena, a fifth-year kinesiology and health science student from Woodbridge, Ont., accounted for all of the Lions' scoring last weekend as second-ranked York improved to 7-0-1 in league play thanks to a 1-1 draw at Western and a 3-2 road victory over Windsor. After netting his team's lone goal Friday in London, the senior forward registered a hat trick against the Lancers on Sunday, including the game-winning marker in the 76th minute. The two-time all-Canadian currently sits in second place in OUA scoring with 10 goals in eight outings.
Soccer players Tyler Lewars of Dalhousie, Samuel Georget of Laval and Brett Lewis of Saskatchewan were the other male nominees.
