Nour Ghoneim, a soccer player from York University, and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a cross country runner from Laval University, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 14, 2012.
Ghoneim, a first-year liberal arts student from Toronto, scored six of the Lions' eight goals last week as York posted back-to-back shutout wins over UOIT, 2-0, and Brock, 6-0. The 5-foot-7 forward accounted for all the scoring last Wednesday against the Ridgebacks, and then exploded for four goals on Sunday against the Badgers, including a natural hat trick with the match's first three markers. Ghoneim, who has played with Canada's junior national team at the under-17 and U19 levels, currently sits fifth in OUA scoring with nine goals despite appearing in only seven contests.
Moncton hockey player Catherine Dumas, Sherbrooke volleyball player Roxane Hasseni and Alberta rugby player Chelsea Guthrie were also nominated for the women's award.
Philibert-Thiboutot, a third-year business administration student from Quebec City, won individual gold on Saturday at the UNB-St. Thomas Invitational in Fredericton, taking first place in a field of 117 runners from 12 RSEQ and AUS schools. The 21-year-old finished the eight-kilometre race in 24:46.2, missing the course record by only one second. His performance helped the Rouge et Or capture the men's team title by a comfortable 11-point margin.
Hockey players Tyler Brown of UPEI, Stephen Blunden of Ottawa and Scott Wasden of UBC were the other male nominees.
