WATERLOO, Ont. -- The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football program went young Tuesday.

Laurier named Michael Faulds its new manager of football operations and head coach. The 29-year-old Faulds replaces Greg Jeffries, 66, who resigned in November.

Jeffries stepped down after Laurier (3-5) managed to slip into the playoffs but dropped a season-ending 34-0 quarter-final decision to Queen's.

Faulds takes over the Laurier program after serving three seasons as York's offensive co-ordinator. The former Western star quarterback was selected from a pool of 25 applicants and becomes just the sixth head coach in Laurier's 52-year football history.

"I am very excited about the opportunity that has been given to me," Faulds said in a statement. "Wilfrid Laurier University has a football program with a rich history and tradition and I am honoured to lead the team heading into the future."

Peter Baxter, Wilfrid Laurier's director of athletics and recreation, said Faulds was an obvious selection.

"Michael was the unanimous choice of our search committee, which included six prominent alumni, and since that time has hit the ground running," he said. "He has reached out to many of our Laurier football alumni, calling to engage them in moving the program forward, something he gained a lot of experience in doing with the York Lions."

Faulds is Canadian university football's all-time passing leader with 10,811 yards and also holds the single-season record of 3,033 yards, which he set in 2009, the same season he was named the OUA's outstanding player. Faulds also earned Yates Cup MVP honours in 2007 and 2008.

Laurier also appointed Ron VanMoerkerke as the associate head coach and defensive co-ordinator. He has been with the Golden Hawks for 12 seasons, including the last nine guiding the defence.
