Sunday will mark the 175th installment of the Manchester derby, one of the most storied rivalries in English soccer. Manchester City will visit their cross-city rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The top two teams in the English Premier League will clash for the first time this season at 11:30 a.m. ET on TSN1, 4 and 5.

One of the England’s largest cities, Manchester is split between the red of United and the blue of City.

“On derby day in Manchester, the city is cut in two,” said former United forward Eric Cantona. “The Blue and Reds invade the streets, and if your team wins the city belongs to you.”

Cantona scored eight goals in the seven derbies he played in during his five-year career in Manchester.

“It's important for the fans and for me, it's a massive game of pride,” long time Man U captain Wayne Rooney said in a 2015 interview prior to the 169th derby. “When you play for Manchester United, you want to win these derby games.”

Rooney holds the all-time record for derby goals with 11, compiled during his 13-year care Antoine Griezmann er with United.

When forward Carlos Tevez made the controversial jump from United to City in 2009, the rivalry was played out in the town centre. Fans of the Tevez’s new club paid for a billboard downtown that said “Welcome to Manchester Carlos” in City blue.

City heads into Sunday looking to remain undefeated on the season and extend their winning streak to 14 games. A victory over United would set a new Premier League record – a mark they tied with last week’s 2-1 victory over West Ham.

For United, a win would help close the eight-point gap between them and first-place City and prevent their rivals from running away with the Premiership.

United will be without star midfielder Paul Pogba, who was given a red card during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Arsenal. The French international was ejected late in the game for a dangerous challenge on Hector Bellerin and was suspended for the next three Premier League matches.

The 24-year-old has three goals and eight assists this season, including an assist on Saturday before being ejected.

United has struggled with injuries this season and coach Jose Mourinho was without six players in Tuesday’s Champions League match against CSKA Moscow.

The injury list included defenders Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, midfielders Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini, defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic, and striker Zlatan Ibrahimović.

Mourinho has confirmed that Matic will return Sunday. Ibrahimović is likely to play, and Jones and Fellaini might be fit. Bailly and Carrick will not be ready for the match.

City midfielder David Silva missed his club’s Champions League game on Wednesday against Shakhtar Donetsk and is questionable for the derby. The 31-year-old Spaniard has two goals and eight assists in 15 games this season, including the winning goal last week against West Ham.

“David had a little bit of problems in the last minutes [of the West Ham game],” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “We made a test after the game and I don’t know if he is able to play on Sunday, so that’s why he stayed there, to recover in Manchester.”

Recent history has been fairly even between the two Mancunian clubs, as United leads the series 3-2-2 over the past three seasons.
