I really think that new Edmonton Oilers head coach Pat Quinn and Associate Head Coach Tom Renney compliment each other. They really offset each other's strengths and weaknesses quite well. What this also tells me, though, is that Steve Tambellini is firmly in control of the Edmonton Oilers.
We know he's been the general manager for the past year, but as long as Kevin Lowe was there, and continued to be there, there was always the sense that "maybe Steve wasn't running the show, and Kevin was still pulling the strings from afar." I never actually believed that, but that perception was out there.
I think this hiring of a couple of ex-Vancouver Canucks in Quinn and Renney really underlines and emphasizes that this is Tambellini's team, and that he's putting his fingerprints all over it.
Sutter's Search
In terms of what we're leading towards and what we're seeing, Darryl Sutter is likely to be the next head coach of the Calgary Flames.
But as he says, he wants to go out and have a look around, and if he finds somebody better than himself, then he'll hire them. If I were a betting man I would suggest that Darryl Sutter is going to take over the Flames as the head coach if he doesn't find anyone else between now and the June 26 Entry Draft.
