NHL players want more discussion on the instigator rule, no-touch icing and ice conditions.
All three of these topics are considered priorities among the five players representing the players association at Friday's competition committee meeting in Toronto.
The majority of NHL general managers want the instigator penalty to stay the same, however the players want their say on the issue and further discussion into whether or not its time to boost the cumulative penalties from 3 to at least 5 before suspension is applied.
The concept of no-touch icing was a popular topic during NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly's fall tour primarily because of the ongoing fear of injury, supported in March when Minnesota's Kurtis foster broke his leg following a collision with San Jose's Torrey Mitchell who was racing to prevent an icing call.
The players, like many of the managers, want to thoroughly look at no-touch icing, plus some of the examples other leagues are using to maintain the level of competition while promoting safety.
"Bad ice" is a description that sends NHL ice-man, Dan Craig reeling, but players want to know what can be done to improve what they describe as "poor" ice conditions across the league.
Decisions won't be made this week, but the conclusions drawn from this meeting will be passed along to the NHLPA's 30 player executive board and then on to the NHL's board of governors for final discussion on June 18th.
